  1. Name of the Course : Pre-sea Training in Marine Engineering for Diploma holders.

  2. Duration : Two years.

  3. Eligibility for Admission
    1. Course starts : 1st December , every year.
    2. Admission process starts : July / August every year.
    3. Nationality : Indian
    4. Qualification : Diploma ( Mechanical / Electrical / Shipbuilding / Marine Engineering ) with minimum 55% mark in aggregate of all the semesters from an AICTE approved Institution.
    5. Age : Age not exceeding 28 years on 02nd December, 2009,
    6. English : Minimum 50% marks in English in Std. X or XII or Comm Skill I & II in Diploma.
    7. Eye Sight : 6/6 or 6/12 in each eye or 6/18 in one eye and 6/9 in the better eye. Normal colour vision (tested by Ishihara test chart ) and no colour blindness.
    8. Medical Fitness : Medically fit for sea service as per DGS rules.

  4. Placement :
    IMS Goa has arrangement with following Shipping Companies for placement. The Companies select the candidates at the time of admission itself

    Placement for all successful candidates is assured.

  5. Fee ( at IMS, Goa) :
    Rs.3,65,000/- inclusive of tuition fee, library, laboratory charges, uniforms, training & assessment record book, training manual, course books and fee for four Auxiliary Courses, Boarding, Lodging, Engine Simulator Course, CDC, INDos, IME (I) Registration Etc.
    In addition to the fee, candidates will deposit an amount of Rs.10,000/- as caution money which will be refunded at the end of training.
    Note : The fee will not be refunded, in the event of a candidate withdrawing from the training.

  6. Syllabus  for Written Test: ( 2.5 hrs. duration)
    Paper I – 100 marks        Duration – 1.5 hrs.        Type of Questions – Descriptive, numericals etc.
    1. Applied Mechanics                     – 25 marks
    2. Heat Engines / Thermodynamics –  25 marks
    3. Mathematics                             –  25 marks
    4. Machine Drawing                       – 25 marks

    Syllabus for above paper is Diploma syllabus. Applied Mechanics / Heat Engines papers will have numericals. For drawing paper, two sectioned views i.e front elevation and side view / plan will have to be drawn.
    Candidates are required to bring their Instrument box containing pencils, compass, set square etc.

    Engineering Knowledge
    - Objective type questions ( multiple choice) ( Negative marking for wrong answer)

    Syllabus
    - Questions will be set from very basics of following topics, which have been covered in  Diploma  Course in the Polytechnic.
    - Applied Physics, Applied Mechanics, Materials, Strength of Materials, NDT Tests, Power Engineering, Fundamental of Refrigeration, Diesel Engines, its systems and maintenance.
    - Electricity, AC Fundamentals, Basic AC/DC machines, simple electrical circuits.
    - Workshop Practices, measuring instruments, welding, soldering, brazing processes etc.

    Section B
    -  25 Marks
    1. General Knowledge, Mental Ability Tests
    a. General Knowledge : Current Events, Important Events from History, Science and Technology, Sports, Inventions and Discoveries, Geography, Awards, Pollution Prevention, Environment Protection, Indian Constitution, Brain Teasers, etc.
    b. Mental Ability / Tests of Reasoning.

    Section C - 25 Marks
    a) English:
    i. Essay & Letter Writing. Use of correct Grammar ability to write good English.

    Additional Weightage for final selection:-
    1. 60% or above marks in Applied Mechanics, Heat Engines, Mathematics in Diploma
    2. Candidates with XII Std.
    3. 60% or above marks in X Std.

  7. Selection Procedure:
    1. On receipt of applications, eligible candidates will be sent admit card by e-mail only.
    2. Candidate is required to affix his photo on the admit card and bring it with him to exam. centre for written test.
    3. Written test for all candidates will be held at Goa, at 10.00 a.m. on 09th August, 2009 ( Sunday). The address of the test centre in above place will be mentioned in the admit card.
    4. The list of Candidates shortlisted for interview, along with interview schedule will be displayed on www.imsgoa.org. The interviews will be held at Goa, on the dates mentioned in Admission schedule.
    5. Names of the candidates selected in the interviews and also those placed in waitlist will be put up at the Interview centre, as per admission schedule.
    6. All candidates called for Interview will have to pay Rs.800/- in cash for Psychometric test which will be held together with the Interviews.
    7. The selected and waitlisted candidates will pay Rs.1500/- towards Admission processing fees. Above payment to be made in cash at interview centre. Waitlisted candidates not called for admission will be refunded Rs.1500/- subsequently.
    8. Medical Examination for selected candidates only will be conducted. These candidates will have to pay Rs. 3,500/- towards medical exam fee.
    9. Candidates who are awaiting final semester results may also apply. However, they will be required to produce the Diploma Certificate along with mark  sheet at the time of interview.
    10. Unattested One set of  Xerox Copies of following  Certificates is   to be  brought with  you at the time of Interview along with the originals.
      1. Class X or XII   certificate showing Date of Birth.
      2. Class X  or  XII   or Diploma Marksheet  showing marks in English. ( Min. marks required – 50 %)
      3. Marksheet  for all semesters of  Diploma.
      4. Diploma  certificate  issued  by  the  State Board of Technical Education. Provisional  Passing Certificate  issued  by  the  Board  may  be submitted, incase the Final  certificate from Board  is not received yet. Provisional Certificate issued by the College is not acceptable.
      5. Candidates  who have appeared  for  the  qualifying  examination  and  awaiting  results  should  attach   a  certificate  from  the  appropriate  authority  to  that  effect.
      6. Bonafide student and AICTE approval certificate in the format attached at Annex- I.
      7. Certificates  of  participation  in  NCC/NSS, Sports and other extra curricular activities,  if  any.
      Certificates of only selected candidates will be verified. It is the candidates responsibility to ensure his eligibility as per details given above, and also fill in true and correct information in the application form.
    11. All expenses incurred by way of travelling, boarding, lodging etc. for the purpose of this selection, will have to be borne by the candidate.
    12. Any candidate found using unfair means or having made false representations will be disqualified.
    13. It has been brought to our notice that some agents / persons are charging a fee from the prospective candidates to facilitate selection at IMS, Goa. Please be advised that we have NO such agreement with any agents nor any individual or Company, for the purpose of selection of candidates.
    14. Medical standards in this line of work are very strict. Furthermore the nature of work involved demands a tough constitution and sailing on merchant ships for upto 10 months at a time. If you have any doubts about meeting these requirements we advise you to reconsider your decision to join this field. 
    15. Candidates whose applications are received after 5th August may not be issued admit cards due to shortage of time. Such candidates are requested to report to the examination centres of their choice along with two copies of their photograph.
    16. Candidates are required to pass Class IV Part A examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Dept., Govt. of India to become eligible for joining ship as Engineer.
    17. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:-Institute will assist candidates in obtaining educational loans from local Banks.
    18. PASSPORT: Selected candidates are required to have a valid Indian Passport at the time of course commencement. Those who do not hold an Indian Passport, should immediately apply for the same and submit 5 copies to the office on or before 01st December, 2009.
