IMPORTANT INFORMATION (FOR DEGREE ENTRY)

  1. Name of the Course : Pre-sea Training in Marine Engineering for Graduate holders.

  2. Duration : One year

  1. Eligibility for Admission
    1. Nationality : Indian
    2. Qualification : B.E. ( Mechanical / Naval Architecture ) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate of all the semesters from an AICTE approved Institution.
    3. Age : Age not exceeding 28 years on 02nd December, 2011.
    4. English : Minimum 50% marks in English in Std. X or XII.
    5. Eye Sight : 6/6 or 6/12 in each eye or 6/18 in one eye and 6/9 in the better eye. Normal colour vision (tested by Ishihara test chart ) and no colour blindness.
    6. Medical Fitness : Medically fit for sea service as per DGS rules.

      NOTE:
      1. Please do not apply, if you do not satisfy above eligibility criteria.
      2. All correspondence at selection stage will be done on e-mail.
      3. All applicants must have an e-mail id and mention the same in the application form.
      4. Candidates are advised to check their eyesight to ensure it meets requirements as specified above. Candidate found deficient will be disqualified immediately and not given chance to correct the eye sight by surgery.



  2. Selection Procedure:
    1. On receipt of applications, and the draft of Rs. 1500/- eligible candidates will be sent Hall Ticket by e-mail only.
    2. Candidate is required to affix his photo on the Hall Ticket and bring it with him / her to exam. centre for Online test.
    3. Online test will be conducted in collaboration with Anglo Eastern Ship Management Ltd. The details of the test centres will be mentioned in the Hall ticket.
    4. The list of Candidates shortlisted for interview, along with interview schedule will be displayed on www.imsgoa.org. The interviews will be held at the Institute at Goa, on the dates mentioned in Admission schedule.
    5. Names of the candidates selected in the interviews and also those placed in waitlist will be put up at the Institute, as per admission schedule.
    6. All candidates selected for Interview must bring with them a Demand Draft of Rs. 6,000/- drawn in favour of "The Director, Institute of Maritime Studies" payable at Vasco Da Gama (Goa) towards Admission + Medica fee, in anticipation of being selected.
    7. The selected and waitlisted candidates will have to deposit a draft of Rs.6,000/-, before verification of certificates.
    8. Draft will be returned to waitlist Candidate not called for selection / medical. An amount of Rs. 2,500/- will be refunded to the Candidate who fails in Medicals.
    9. Candidates who are awaiting final semester results may also apply. However, they will be required to produce the Degree Certificate along with mark sheet at the time of interview.
    10. One set of Unattested Xerox Copies of following  Certificates is to be brought by the candidate at the time of certificate verification along with the originals.
      1. Passing Certificate of Std. X or XII , showing date of birth.
      2. Marksheet of X and XII exam.
      3. Provisional / Degree Certificate of B.E. (Mechanical/ Naval Architecture) issued by the University (Certificate issued by College is not acceptable)
      4. Marksheets of all semesters of B.E.
      5. Bonafide student and AICTE approval Certificate in the format available on IMS,Goa website.
      6. Certificates for any additional courses done, extra curricular activities like NSS / NCC/ Scouts etc.
      7. Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examination and awaiting results should attach a certificate from the appropriate authority to that effect.
      8. Proof of Work Experience, if any.
      Certificates of only selected candidates will be verified. It is the candidate´s responsibility to ensure his eligibility as per details given above, and also fill in true and correct information in the application form.
    11. All expenses incurred by way of travelling, boarding, lodging etc. for the purpose of this selection, will have to be borne by the candidate.
    12. Any candidate found using unfair means or having made false representations will be disqualified.
    13. It has been brought to our notice that some agents / persons are charging a fee from the prospective candidates to facilitate selection at IMS, Goa. Please be advised that we have NO such agreement with any agents nor any individual or Company, for the purpose of selection of candidates.
    14. Medical standards in this line of work are very strict. Furthermore the nature of work involved demands a tough constitution and sailing on merchant ships for upto 10 months at a time. If the candidates have any doubts about meeting these requirements, they are advised to reconsider their decision to join this field.
    15. Candidates whose applications are received after 26th July may not be issued admit cards due to shortage of time. Such candidates are requested to report to the examination centres of their choice along with two copies of their photograph.

    Note:
      • In case, a candidate withdraws from the training, the fee paid will not be refunded to him.
      • Candidate desirous of obtaining educational loan from Bank may approach Bank of India, Vasco Branch. It is advisable that they open an account in that Bank, before applying for loan.
      • If a candidate  after  joining  this  training course withdraws on his own from the training or  is  expelled on disciplinary  ground,  he  shall  not  be  eligible  for  any  refund  of  fees.
      • Penalty @ Rs.50/- per day for late payment of fee will be charged as per the rules laid down by the INSTITUTE. Late  payment with penalty is limited to a period of 15 days. After expiry of 15 days, heavier penalty may be imposed or the candidate may be expelled from training as per discretion of the Director.
      • In unavoidable cercumstances, fee may be revised during training, and the differance will be playable at that time.

  5. ADDITIONAL WEIGHTAGE FOR FINAL SELECTION:-

      • Passed XII or Degree from Goa university.
      • Percentage of marks in XII / Diploma
      • Work Experience from 3 months onwards.
      • NCC/Scout.

  6. RESERVED SEATS:
    A total of 8 seats  in GME and DME Batch are reserved for sons of employees of the Organizations providing training facilities to IMS. These seats are allotted as per merit list drawn for the  candidates under this category and does not involve any capitation fee.

  7. INSURANCE AND INDEMNITY:
      • In view of the training being given in Industrial workshops, Shipyards and Training Vessels it is advisable that the cadets take their own life and medical insurance policies.
      • The Institute is in the process of taking Mediclaim Policy for each Cadet for a value of Rs.50,000/- for the period of training. The premium for this policy will be intimated to the Cadet for recovery at a later date.
      • Notwithstanding above provisions, the Cadet and his/her parent/guardian shall sign a declaration indemnifying the INSTITUTE against any claim arising during the tenure of training.

  8. HOSTEL:
    1.  Hostel facilities for cadets  include:
    - Rooms ( on triple sharing basis) for  studying and sleeping.
    - Cadets Mess for all meals ( No meals are allowed to be taken  in room).
    - Recreation rooms for playing indoor games, viewing T.V. and Internet  station.
    - Grounds / playing fields for outdoor games.
    2. Hostel Warden is in-charge of the hostel and is available round the clock.
    3. Liberty to go out is given only on Saturday evenings and Sundays. Night offs are permitted only once a month. Parents/Cadets are advised not to  request for night offs or additional liberty for any reason.

  9. ISSUE OF CDC:
    The INSTITUTE has to apply to the Shipping Master, Mumbai for issuing the CDC for each   Cadet. The fee for this as charged by Shipping Master is Rs.500/-, which is included in I term fee.

  10. ISSUE OF INDos No.:
    The INSTITUTE has to obtain INDos No. ( Indian National  Database of Seafarers) for  all Cadets on joining training INSTITUTE. The fee of Rs.1200/- charged for this registration is included in I term fee.

  11. AUXILIARY COURSES:  Satisfactory completion of courses in Fire Fighting, First Aid, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, is the  requirement of the  STCW 95 Convention, and  hence is made compulsory by Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India.  These courses are not conducted in the INSTITUTE.  However, the INSTITUTE will arrange for these courses for its Cadets, at an appropriate training centre.The fee for these courses in included in first term fee.

    These courses are of two  weeks durations and form a part of the training programme being conducted by the INSTITUTE.   No refund of fee, partly or fully, shall be made, if the cadet has already done   these courses, elsewhere, before joining the  INSTITUTE.

  12. PLACEMENT :
    IMS Goa has arrangement with  following Shipping Companies for placement. The Companies select the candidates at the time of admission itself
    1. M/s. Wilhelmsen  Ship Management, (formerly known as Barber Ship Management.)
    2. Anglo Eastern Ship Management
    3. V Ships
    Note: Placement for all successful candidates is assured.
  13. CLASS IV PART A :
    Candidates are exempted from  Class IV Part A examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Dept., Govt. of India to become eligible for joining ship as Engineer.

  14. PASSPORT:
    Selected candidates are required to have a valid Indian Passport at the time of course commencement. Those who do not hold an Indian Passport, should immediately apply for the same and submit  5 copies to the  office on or before 01st December, 2011.

    Paper I – 100 marks        Duration – 1.5 hrs.        Type of Questions – Descriptive, numericals etc.

      • Applied Mechanics – 25 marks
      • Heat Engines / Thermodynamics – 25 marks
      • Mathematics – 25 marks
      • Machine Drawing – 25 marks

    Questions  for above papers will be set from the topics covered in Diploma Course in the Polytechnic. Applied Mechanics / Heat Engines papers will have numerical. For drawing paper, two sectioned views i.e front elevation and side view / plan will have to be drawn.
    Candidates are required to bring their Instrument box containing pencils, compass, set square etc.

    Paper II – 100 marks    Duration - 1 hr.      Type of Questions – Objective type (for section A & B)

      - Applied Physics, Applied Mechanics, Materials, Strength of Materials, NDT Tests, Power Engineering, Fundamental of Refrigeration, Diesel Engines, its systems and maintenance.
      - Electricity, AC Fundamentals, Basic AC/DC machines, simple electrical circuits.
      - Workshop Practices, measuring instruments, welding, soldering, brazing processes etc.

    2. SECTION B -  25 Marks
      General Knowledge, Mental Ability Tests
      a. General Knowledge : Current Events, Important Events from History, Science and Technology, Sports, Inventions and Discoveries, Geography, Awards, Pollution Prevention, Environment Protection, Indian Constitution, Brain Teasers, etc.
      b. Mental Ability / Tests of Reasoning.

    3. SECTION C - 25 Marks
      a) English
      b) Essay & Letter Writing. Use of correct Grammar ability to write good English.

  13. Candidates are required to pass Class IV Part A examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Dept., Govt. of India to become eligible for joining ship as Engineer.

  14. PASSPORT:
    Selected candidates are required to have a valid Indian Passport at the time of course commencement. Those who do not hold an Indian Passport, should immediately apply for the same and submit  5 copies to the  office on or before 01st December, 2011.
